found in The Atlanta Constitution 1921 November 27 Fountain Pens Given as Prizes for Good Writing Last year the Conklin Pen Company of Toledo, offered a prize of a fountain pen in each grade of all the grammar schools in the city, beginning with the third, for improvement in writing. the firm has made the same offer again this year. Nearly 400 fountain pens were given the Atlanta school children last year, and the number will be much greater this year. The prize is given for improvement, and not for the best penmanship. A short article is written by each child in all the grades and, near the close of school in April, the same article is written again, and the pupil making the greatest improvement is awarded the prize fountain pen. Writing Director W.C. Lowe states that nothing has so stimulated interest in penmanship in the school as the contest last year, and the enthusism with which the childer have been writing the first copy indicates still greater interest this year.

The fountain pen company finally agreed to raise all of the 115 workers salaries. Unfortunately, Conklin had been hit very hard by the Great Depression, and it could hardly afford to pay it's workers more. Without a workforce however they were finished so the company choese to end the strike as quickly as possible. This marks the end of Conklin's downward spiral. Within six months Conklin would sell its company to a Chicago firm and relocate there. Pens under the Conklin name would continue to be manufactured, but they were not of the same quality. |
