The pen is signed "Yu" the artistic name for Takahashi,
a Namiki artist known for his superb work with birds and flowers.
If you have Murakami's book "Dunhill Namiki and Lacquer Pens"
turn to page 25. There you will find a page showing another pen
by Yu, and yes it is another bird and flower scene.
The pen is in perfectly mint condition. I doubt it was ever used. |
Here is the most lovely, stunning fountain pen that
has ever come into my possession. A 1930's Dunhill Namiki taka maki-e
fountain pen. The Cap shows a long tailed bird in flight and the barrel
has an exquisite Peony with golden leaves.
What places the Dunhill Namiki pens above all other maki-e pens
is the insane amount of detail. I have taken maki-e lessons myself
and what you quickly realize is that lacquer is not the same as
paint. Yes, they are both applied with brushes, but that is where
the likeness ends. Lacquer is far harder to work. Making simple
shapes is relatively easy, but any kind of detail becomes difficult.
Fine detail as seen here can only be achieved by a master artist.
