Here is a pen that you do not see every day. A Pilot
1954-R ruby red celluloid pen.
The "R" pens first came out in 1935. The
distinctive points for this line were the sword clip and the jewels
on the end of the cap and barrel. For the longest time I thought
the "R" stood for Ryousuke Namiki, the founder of Pilot.
However recently I learned from a retired Pilot Salesman that
the "R" stood for "Roof." In the States we
often call pens like this "jeweled" pens because the
pointy ends kind of look like a gemstone. The Japanese on the
other hand looked at the same thing and thought that these ends
looked like the roofs on the old style Japanese houses.
It is said that Namiki designed the clip himself.
He was always fond of the expression "The Pen is Mightier
than the Sword."
The cap and barrel are made of a bright red marble
celluloid. Quite a striking color.
One nice thing about this pen is that the nib has
some nice springy nice flex to it. A great pen for the calligrapher
or people like me who dabble in copperplate style calligraphy.
