Kamakura Fountain Pens

Below is a copy of Paul Wirt's obituary printed in The Morning Press, Bloomsburg, PA January 21, 1935. The obituary was a nice tribute to Paul Wirt, but many of the details were misprinted or mistaken. I imagine that this is one reason why many earlier publications on Paul Wirt contained errors; they simply took these details from this obituary as factual. I copied the obituary as it appeared in 1935 with the incorrect dates. For the correct information see the Paul Wirt research pages on this site.

END CAME AT 1:45 A.M.

Paul E. Wirt, inventor of the fountain pen, and for years a leading Bloomsburg citizen, died this morning at 1:45 at his home on West Fifth street.

Paul Wirt was in his eighty-sixth year. His death followed an illness of some weeks, during which his condition was critical. His condition became such, however, that he was able to be about for several weeks, but last week he suffered a relapse and was never again able to leave his home.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Pauline Roche, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Wirt.

Paul Wirt was born in Cambra on June 25, 1849, and while a boy moved with his father to Bloomsburg. Paul Wirt prepared himself for legal practice under Charles G. Barkley, one of the most widely known lawyers in Central Pennsylvania, and was admitted to the bar on September 4, 1877.

While engaged in his professional work, he began experimenting with fountain pens
