Calvin Coolidge, suddenly became president as he succeeded President Warren Harding as president after his assination. Coolidge took the oath of office in Plymouth Notch, VT early in the morning of Friday, August 3rd, and arrived in Washington late that night, the day after the death of President Harding. Coolidge wore the black arm band in mourning and used Harding's favorite pen to sign papers. This pen was made of wood from the yoke of the original liberty bell.
