F.D.R. Shuffles
Pens; Gets Best
End of Bargain
WASHINGTON.
President Roosevelt apparently came out
on the long end of a pen
swapping shuffle when he signed
the neutrality bill Saturday.
Here is one version of what
happened:
Chairman Sol Bloom (d., N.
Y.), of the house foreign affairs
committee took a fancy Waterman
fountain pen to the white house for the
president's use, expecting to
keep it as a souvenir.
Chairman Pittman (d., Nev..)
of the senate foreign relations '
committee wanted a souvenir,
too. so two pens of five cent
variety were obtained. Mr.
Roosevelt used both, gave one to
Bloom and the other to Pittman.
Bloom's fancy Waterman fountain pen
stayed at the white house.
