Sir-- I have a pen made of a quill from an American
Eagle -- it was found on an island in the northern part of Green
Bay-- I make it a gift to your Excellency--
The pen, it has been said, is more potent than the sword-- Each,
in your hand, has evinced a power which mightily affects the interest
of the nation--
I trust that this small gift may be acceptable, and that it may
become the instrument of State papers, as great in their influence
for humanity, as your immortal Proclamation of Freedom to the Slave.
With sentiments of of esteem I am respectfully,
Yours -- &c.
