From the image we can only assume that President Monroe, like most people of his time, used the goose quill pen. In the image we can just see part of what looks like a silver ink pot with a quill. On 30 April 1803, President made great use of his quill. On that date he concluded a deal with French foreign minister Talleyrand to purchase all of Louisiana for $ 15 million.

Monroe’s bold gamble was a turning point in American history. At the stroke of a pen, the nation had doubled in size, laying the foundation for America’s future emergence as a great power.
