Here is a rather difficult Wirt pen to find, the hex pen. The shape is not as comfortable as the usual cylandrical pens, but you have to remember that pen clips were not common until 1907. Pens made before this were prone to rolling off desks. Mark Twain, in his endorsement for Conklin pens in 1903, praised the Conklin pen's crescent as a "profanity saver." The large hump prevented the pen from rolling around.

This hex pen helped prevent a pen from rolling around, but just a little. If the pen was any more facetd it would be too uncomfortable to write with. Perhaps this is why the pen was not very popular and they are exceedingly difficult to find today.

This pen is marked in the 1890 catalog as No. 16. The original price was $3.00

A similar pen exists: Wirt # 17-G M . This is also a hex pen, but a red motled version with gold bands. A pen that I am still hunting for. Anyone have one that is willing to trade or sell?
