Wirt #22 Gold Snail Repose Overlay

In the 1890 Wirt catalog this is pen is listed as #22. The Original price was $6.50, one of the most expensive pens in the catalog.

The pen came with the black Wirt box, but I am not sure if it is original. I've seen a few other Wirt overfeed overlays come in a nicer clam shell type box, while this box was likely meant for the plain BCHR pens. But of course this was likely up to the agent or jeweler who sold the pen to the customer.

This is the first Wirt Overlay I acquired for my collection. Again it was a kind of a bad trade on my part. I traded a Waterman 55 Cardinal (with a small crack in the cap) and a rare, huge #8 Lancaster blow filler with a gold overlay. My pens were worth more together I am sure, but Wirt Overlays are not exactly easy to find as well. I had looked for a year and though I was able to acquire many BCHR Wirts, I hadn't been able to find any Paul Wirt overlays at any price.
