Wirt's Hump filler

After Paul E. Wirt had a feed that he was happy with, he began to put his energy towards a better way to fill his pens than with an eye dropper. Eyedroppers worked and were simple, but they could often be messy. Nearly every Wirt box that I have in my collection is heavily stained with ink. The user tended to keep the eyedropper in the box, and after filling the pen with ink, the soiled dropper was returned to the box. Not only that, but if you have ever tried to fill a pen with an eyedropper, you know it is easy to drip or spill ink everywhere. There had to be a better way.

Wirt patented several self fillers of his own design. These worked but they were usually complicated and time consuming like the folding Syringe filler shown below. Nevertheless, Paul Wirt was a practicle businessman. When he didn't have a working design of his own, he licensed one that did work. Among my Self-filling Wirts, I have several of these licensed designs.
